Oleg's interview with Cliff Evans of TANK by phone. I'd like to say extra thanks to Cliff Evans of TANK(it was really nice to talk to you) and Paola Sala(couldn't have done it without you). Oleg: Hello! Cliff?! How are you? Cliff: Oleg? Is that you? Paola told me yesterday. It's pretty cool. Oleg: Yes, I can't believe that I'm speaking with Cliff Evans himself. I'm a little nervous, sorry. Cliff: It's o.k. Don't worry about it. Oleg: Cliff, first of all I'm very glad that the band still is alive and its in good shape. My first question: who's currently in the band? Cliff: Yes, we're much more than alive. Current members of TANK are me, Algy, Mick and Steve Hopgood. Oleg: Sounds great! Another question about the new CD. Has it already been recorded? Cliff: Yes, we have another live CD called "Live in Japan", it was recorded 3 weeks ago. And we're working on the another new studio album. Oleg: Is it called "Still At War"? Cliff: Yes, it's called "Still At War". Oleg: What record company will you use this time? Is it Rising Sun again? Cliff: No, we don't work with Rising Sun anymore. Oleg: Who is gonna be a producer of this album? Cliff: It'll be recorded and produced by TANK. Oleg: Great! Can you tell me please if Würzel(ex-MOTÖRHEAD) played with TANK or not? Cliff: No, he has never played with TANK. He played with Algy in another metal band. Oleg: Cliff, what can you say about the show in Tokyo? What songs did you play there? How many people were on the show? Cliff: It was very cool, we played "This Means War", "Power Of The Hunter", "Don't Walk Away", "T.W.D.A.M.O.", "Echoes Of A Distant Battle", "Shellshock" and there were about 4000 people. Oleg: How about new songs? Did you play some new songs? Cliff: No, we didn't. It was the NWOBHM 20th Anniversary and we played old songs only. Oleg: Who opened the show? Cliff: TRESPASS opened the show. After TRESPASS played SAMSON. We played after SAMSON. PRAYING MANTIS finished the show. We'll send you a new Live in Japan CD. Oleg: Thank you very much Cliff and don't forget to sign it, please. Cliff: Of course, don't worry! Oleg: I know that you're very popular in Japan. I would have to say that you have a lot of fans from Japan. I received the information about show in Tokyo from Japanese fans. Cliff: Really? It's pretty cool! Oleg: Yeah, also you have lots of fans in Sweden, Canada, Netherlands... Everywhere, I was surprised finding out about it! People still remember power of the TANK. Cliff: Good. We'll have a tour in Europe with PRAYING MANTIS, SAMSON and ANGEL WITCH this year. Oleg: I know that you were touring the USA way back in the middle of 80s. One fan from Chicago told me that he saw your show in Chicago. Cliff: Yes, we were in Chicago and New York. We didn't go to the West of US. We went East. And we had a tour in Europe with METALLICA. It was very cool! Oleg: I can imagine. Cliff, what are guys from the TANK doing now? Are they in England or out of the country? Cliff: Yes, everybody is in England. We're making some kind of work. Oleg: How old are you? Cliff: I'm 37. Oleg: How about Algy? Cliff: He's 39 years old. Oleg: Are you married? Cliff: None of us are, we're on the road all the time. Oleg: I understand. Cliff, I've heard that you wanted to visit Los Angeles. Cliff: Yes, I have friends there. It's gonna be next month. Oleg: In October? Cliff: Yes, October. Oleg: Does it mean that all members of TANK will be there or is it only you? Cliff: Me and drummer only. Oleg: Steve Hopgood? Cliff: Yes, Steve Hopgood. Oleg: That'll be nice. And also I'd like to meet with you. L.A. has lots of nice places. I've been at the Whisky two weeks ago and saw the TESTAMENT there. It was good! I wish it was TANK on the stage instead. Cliff: We played with Di' Anno's band few years ago at the Whisky A Go-Go. Oleg: Do you mean his band KILLERS? Cliff: Yes, KILLERS. Oleg: I like KILLERS album called "Murder One". It's a pretty cool album. Cliff: Yes, it's a good album. We have one more album, but I think this one much more better. Oleg: I like your last live album "The Return Of The Filth Hounds...live ". It's a great album! And I like your couple new studio songs very much. Good job! Cliff: Do you have this album? Oleg: Of course, I have all of your albums. Whose idea was to reunite TANK? Cliff: It was my idea. We were touring with Di'Anno in Germany and lots of people asked about TANK. Oleg: Cliff I know that you had plans of visiting Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany this year. Cliff: We'll probably visit Wacken Open Air next year. We're planning on producing a new studio album and after that we'll probably visit to Wacken Open Air next year. Oleg: Cliff, do you remember whose idea was it for you to join TANK? I thought it was in 1984? Cliff: Yes, it was in 84. It was Algy's idea. I left from one of the blues band. Algy saw me when I was playing in this band and he suggested me to play with TANK. Oleg: Cliff, thanks a lot for the great conversation and brand new information about the band. Please, say hello to Algy, Mick and Steve from me and all of your fans. Talk to you later and see you in L.A. Cliff: I'll call to guys and tell them about it. Thanks to you also. It was also nice to speak with you. Bye! Oleg: Bye, Cliff. For the interview(in Swedish) with Algy Ward go to METAL ONLY webzine. For the interview with Cliff Evans go to METAL RULES! webzine. |
